ON SET: November 8th 2003, Lordi’s The Kin

In 2004 Lordi made their first jump into movies with Lordi’s The Kin, which is a 30-minute short film, originally released as a bonus DVD with the limited edition version of The Monsterican Dream album in April 2004. The film tells a story of a woman named Anna Henderson who is writing a book about monsters who after a series of events start to show up in the real world. The film is a standalone surrealistic, Twilight Zone-esque episode and leaves a lot of questions for the viewer to figure out. The Kin is directed by Lauri Haukkamaa and the original story was co-written by Lordi himself.

The filming started in November 2003 and I had a chance to visit the set on one Saturday for an exclusive behind-the-scenes scoop. During that day they filmed Kita’s scene in the woods of eastern Helsinki and the film’s final scene in Designmuseo. I even got to be an extra sitting in the audience in the final scene. The Kin was the first time Lordi used his The Monsterican Dream -era mask design and the last two photos in this gallery are probably the first images of it (humble brag). Lordi, Kita, Kalma, Amen and Enary all have small parts in the film.

The film didn’t turn out quite what Lordi had hoped for. When he saw the first cut of the film, the director had left out many crucial scenes and added some of his own to make the plot even more surreal and dreamlike. Turned out, Haukkamaa had never seen a horror movie even though Lordi thought they had a clear understanding in what they were making. Although it looks good, the finished film was a bad compromise that neither Lordi or the director were happy with. But it still plays a major part in expanding and getting the Lordi universe out into other media. On the original MonsterDiscoHell website there were only a handful of photos, so here’s 13 never-before-seen too!
